Hencia and I met and got engaged when we were 22 years old. The following year, in May 1994, we were married and planted the church a year after that. We’ve done life and ministry together ever since, making a great team. We have three wonderful, busy and enthusiastic sons and together we form the spearhead of newDAY. We all have very different interests, I ride a Harley, love rugby, books, history and music while Hencia loves dancing, ballet, her home, the sea and family time. We are passionate about Johannesburg, the nations and seeing people reached for the Gospel in a real way. At newDAY we see ourselves as one church planting churches into different locations; that will serve other churches and the nations for the generations to come. There are currently newDAY churches in the West Rand, Birchleigh North, Thembisa and Boksburg areas and we continue to watch, with great joy, as God works miracles and adds incredible people to us. Some of the history…
1994 was the start of something incredible. God spoke to Greig & Hencia to take a bold step and plant a church. And so the creation of what would now become newDAY began.
They started off with a home group in their flat in Rosebank, and on 14 May 1995, they were released by their church to start newDAY (then known as Living Word Community Church) in the Bedfordview Primary School hall. Four years later, in 1999, the church moved on to the present property. They started out with only five rows of chairs across at their first meeting! It’s hard to explain the excitement the team felt in those early days!
Two years later, in 2001, God spoke again. This time, He told the team to purchase the property and He even told the elders how much should be paid for it. Without the team even telling the church the figure or about the purchase an anonymous cheque for the full amount required was placed in the offering!
About two years later the elders felt God say that it was time to build the auditorium at a cost 10 times that of the purchase price. It was an incredible adventure the whole journey long, and within two years the building was finished and fully paid for!
Our primary purpose is to carry out the mandate provided by Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20 – to make disciples of all nations. We believe that this is part of how we express our worship to God.
We also believe that the most effective way of preaching the Gospel to all who need to hear it is done by planting local churches or sites in every village, town and city across the world; wherever God opens the doors for us. This in turn, will produce people who passionately love and seek to serve God.
We also purpose to be a church that is ‘salt and light’ to the people of our city. In effect, this means that we want to be a blessing to our city. Our city, Johannesburg, of approximately 9,000,000 people, is full of communities that need an authentic expression of Biblical local church.
We believe in making disciples, not just converts, who will actively seek the Kingdom of God first as they work out practically their gifts and talents He has given them to use.
We believe that the church has been called to become a counter culture and counter community that offers life and hope, and influences our city, through the presence and person of the Holy Spirit. This is also why we encourage diversity – that people should come to NewDay as they are. We believe that God has promised us ‘wild’ and ‘cultivated’ growth, and that it is our responsibility and joy to worship Him, to seek His face, and to obey Him as best we can.
We want to see people saved, healed, set free, comforted and released to be all they can be! We are not just saved and our lives radically transformed for ourselves. We want to be a living letter to our families, friends, colleagues, schools and our city, of His great grace, mercy and love at work in our lives. It is for this reason that we meet together as friends to enjoy God and to get commissioned for the work He says He has already planned for us to do.
We have embraced, amongst others, the following Biblical values: Being radically Word-based The phrase “The Bible plus nothing; the Bible minus nothing” sums up our belief that we should preach and live the whole counsel of God, not ignoring any part of the Word, or adding to it in any way. Acts 20:27; Deuteronomy 4:1-2; Mark 7:10-13; Revelation 22:18-19. Priesthood and servanthood We believe that the priesthood is made up of the whole body and not just a few people who may be leaders or may be employed full-time at the church. All of God’s people should be doing the “work of the ministry” on a full time basis in their families, workplace, schools, universities etc. 1 Peter 2:9; Ephesians 2:10; Exodus 19:6; 1 Corinthians 12, 13 and 14 Priority of the nations “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.'” Matthew 28: 18 – 20. This is one of the last instructions Jesus left with His disciples to teach all those who would follow Jesus. At newDAY, we embrace it wholeheartedly, realising that the ‘nations’ are not only across our borders but that they begin in our neighbourhoods. God’s covenant with Abraham, the father of our faith, was that he would be a blessing to the nations and that’s exactly what we want to be. Mark 16:15-16. Friendship and not just function A strong value for us at newDAY is that of friendship with one another. In fact, it goes further than that: We are brothers and sisters in the new covenant God has made with us through Jesus. Acts 2:42–47 describes the relationship that existed between the members of the early church and we seek to emulate that relationship. Our relationship with one another in the church goes far beyond the interactions we have with each other within the functions we perform within the church and also go far beyond simply connecting at corporate meetings. Acts 2:42; John 15:14; Hebrews 10:16; Matthew 26:28. Marriage and family Marriage and family is God’s idea. We place a strong emphasis on both of them, believing that strong marriages result in healthy families. We long to be able to show our city that strong and happy families and marriages are possible in God’s Kingdom. Not only does Ephesians 5:25-32 show us that marriage is a picture of the church, but also it gives us some clear instructions as to how they should both work. Genesis 1:26 – 28; Ephesians 5:25 – 32; Matthew 19:4. We are a people of prayer Scripture, in both Old and New Testaments, places a huge emphasis on prayer, and so do we, whether it is personal or group prayer, prayer meetings or times of prayer and fasting. Acts 1:1 – 4; 2:42; 4:24 – 31; 1 Timothy 2: 1 – 2; Colossians 4:12. Reaching the lost Ephesians 4:12 tells us that the work of an evangelist is to prepare God’s people for the work of the ministry – obviously, in this case, the ministry being evangelism. Whilst there are people with the gift of evangelism in the church, we believe that reaching the lost is also the wonderful responsibility of each and every one in the church. Acts 2:46 – 47; 2 Timothy 4:5; Romans 15:16-20. Tithing Tithing is a Biblical practice, and is an act of worship. It began in the Old Testament before the Law was given, with Melchizedek and Abraham in Hebrews 7:1-10. Giving It is in our giving that we show our generosity. As newDAY we always encourage cheerful and uncompelled giving.
newDAY Kids is a fun and safe environment where the children in our church learn about Jesus and the Bible and how to apply these lessons in everyday life.
We have classes for children aged 4 years old to grade 7 at both of our morning meetings. There are also child minding facilities for the same ages at our 5pm evening meeting.
“Train up a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old he will not depart from it” Proverbs 22:6
newDAY Growth Groups are smaller groups who meet in homes on a regular basis. In these groups we strengthen a walk with Christ with an increasing commitment to personal Godliness.
In our Growth Groups we aim to cultivate healthy relationships, providing rudimentary counselling and guidance in Christian living, marriages, gift development, prayer and worship. Through Christ and these groups the Gospel grows and bears fruit.
